Dear Friends and Family,

Are you familiar with the verses from Ecclesiastes that speaks about for everything there is a season? In that passage there are the verses that tell us that there is a time to cry and mourn and a time to rejoice and dance.

It is interesting that just recently Brian was teaching on these verses at Arise Christian Fellowship. This past month we have seen both sides of these verses multiple times. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions. We have seen the passing on of some very well known Christian leaders who have lived full lives committed to the service of God . We have also lost some very dear friends in the Lord who were young and still very active in ministry. Some of these have been in the states and others here in Uganda. While we know that all of these saints are in the presence of Jesus and have heard the words well done good and faithful servant it is hard to not grieve and to wonder why, especially for the young Christians, who seemed to still have so much to offer the Lord here on earth, for the ministry and for their families.

Dear Friends and Family,

We pray that you all had a nice summer and endured the various heatwaves and natural disasters that we heard about on the news. Even here in Uganda the weather has been challenging. We had a very rainy dry season which is proving difficult for the farmers trying to harvest. It has also led to much sickness, flooding and other difficulties for the people here. I see many people waking up spiritually and turning to the Lord through this season. I believe God is always working even in the hard times and bad weather to draw us to Himself. How interesting it always is to me that it it is usually in the hardest times we seek Him most and though we all desire blessings and peace it is during those time we often tend to drift from Him. I am praying that we would all seek Him and worship Him continually, in the good times and the bad.

Do you ever have those times when you see someone after a long time, and it seems like no time has gone by or that they have always been there?

This past month we experienced that with Joel and Isaac, leaders from my home church. Since Arise Christian Fellowship began about 10 years ago, we have been trying to have some of my home church pastors or leaders come to visit. Every time a trip was planned something would happen from the pandemic to our kids getting called last year for their citizenship. We have really seen that a man makes a plan, but God directs his steps. Finally, this year we made plans again and it was now God’s timing. His timing was evident in the ministry that took place and the fruit that was produced in the short time they were here.

As we enter in to this season of celebrating Christ’s Resurrection let us remember that it is the resurrection that sets us apart from every other religion, what makes us certain that Jesus is the only way to heaven.

Living on the equator we have unique times and seasons throughout the year. For instance we have pretty much 12 hours of dark 12 hours of light all year it varies only by minutes. Our summer is not much different then our winter. It is hotter and drier but only by about 10 to 15 degrees. Our summer or hot season takes place during America’s winter. It is during this time of year that the children of Uganda, as well as mine, have their school year break.

Recently I shared about the church growing and maturing. It has been such a blessing to see the members grow and desire to serve the Lord according to the gifts they have been given.

Some of the people who have been serving have served with Arise Christian Fellowship since before the church even began and we were still meeting in our home. One of these is the Assistant Pastor, Deo Mukasa. Deo, went to Calvary Chapel Bible College with Brian and they graduated together. When Calvary Chapel Entebbe was first beginning he was a part of the church plant there. When Brian first felt called to begin the market ministry here in Kampala and we were have a Bible study at our house, he felt led to ask Deo to come and help out and assist him. For 10 years now the 2 men have served side by side.

This time of year is always a great reminder of why we believe what we believe. It is the reason for counting the cost and giving all we are to sharing the Gospel with the world. There are many religions in the world but it is Christianity alone that has a risen, an alive, Savior. The resurrection of Jesus is our proof and our hope in everything God has promised us through his Word, both for this life and the kingdom to come.

As the church grows not just in size but in maturity, it seems to be a natural result that ministry and the responsibilities of doing the ministry increases as well. I pray you all had a blessed holiday season as you celebrated Christmas and ushered in the New Year.

I believe Christmas is a time when people are more open then other times to hearing about Jesus. You find people of different cultures and faiths acknowledging His birth and even celebrating. As Christians and as a church we realize acknowledging Christ’s birth is not enough to save you. During the holiday season we found the best way to celebrate Jesus’ birthday is to tell people the whole story, that He was born, lived, died for our sin, and rose again, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

Dear Friends and Family,

This past month has been the definition of this passage in Ecclesiastes for us as a ministry and as a family. Let me start with the ministry.

For the ministry it was both a time of planting and a time of reaping. It started with the arrival of Paul. Paul is a Nigerian by birth but has spent much of his life in Russia. It was in Russia that he got born again and began to serve in the ministry. Recently Russia revoked his visa and he returned to Nigeria. Missions was still on his heart and he came to visit FRM’s ministries in Uganda and South Sudan. After spending some time at both he will be helping out the ministry at Canaan Farms in Uganda.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Everyday we have so much to be thankful for. Somedays or seasons of life might be difficult or even painful but if you are a Christian you always have something to be thankful for. I am always thankful for the certain hope of eternity.

I am thankful that for many years I have been able to teach a midweek morning Bible study. At the beginning of this year we took a break because of construction happening at the guest house. By summer we were finally able to meet. I had heard from some of my ladies that they were unable to attend because they had found jobs that would not let them take a morning off. It was a praise report that they had found jobs but I was sad that they couldn’t come.

This past month brought us to another season in Uganda. Its not the rainy season or the dry season, it’s the soccer season! In Uganda, soccer, or as its called here, football, is almost everyone’s favorite pastime. Schools have soccer teams, businesses have soccer teams, the police have soccer teams, churches of every faith have soccer teams and even the various market places here in Uganda have soccer teams. Whether they play it themselves or they watch it from the sidelines, football is a national pastime. This time of year is when the local teams are in their playoffs or tournaments.

In Uganda the short rainy season is almost over. This season follows our very hot season when everything dries up and turns brown and dusty. Now with the short season of rain we have had everything has come back to life and it is very green. Flowers are everywhere you look and you can smell them in the air. The dry season was about 4.5 months it has only rained on and off for 6weeks. It amazes me how quickly the rain can make a difference and restore life. This somehow speaks to me about how our witness of Christ can be that life giving water to someone who desperately needs it.

Dear Friends and Family,

We want to thank you all for your prayers. I know many of you have expressed concern about what has been happening in Sudan. The fighting there continues but we are very far from Sudan and safe in Uganda.

While we are far away and safe, there have been many missionaries and even chaplains who have been stuck in Sudan and have had trouble getting out and to safety. Thankfully the Lord has provided for us to be able to help in different ways. One of the ways was to help one of the South Sudanese chaplain guards and his family to get to safety. Abraham is one of the chaplains who came to help us with security after our robbery in 2019. Due to covid he and the other chaplains ended up spending many months in quarantine with us in Uganda. That time of quarantine brought us all close together. Abraham had been in Sudan serving near Dafur when the fighting broke out. His wife was north of Khartoum about to deliver a baby. Via Facebook he was able to keep us informed of what was happening up until he was finally able to secure transport out of the danger area and to his wife. Here are some of his communications.

HE IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED!

This past month we had a very nice time preparing for celebrating Jesus’ death and resurrection. As we prepared there were other new beginnings taking place amongst our church members as well.

Recently, two of our church members, Wilbur and Leona, announced to the church their intentions of getting married. In Uganda the process of getting married is quite long. Of course there is the normal courtship / dating time. When the man wants to take the relationship further he doesn’t ask the girl to marry him, he has to ask the father and uncles. This is called the visitation. At the visitation the man will go with who ever would be his bestman and one of his uncles. They will meet with the male heads of the girls family and there they will discuss dowry and whether the family believes the match is acceptable. The man normally comes with some gifts to show his seriousness about the marriage proposal and his ability to pay dowry. After the families come to an agreement then the man may ask the girl officially to marry him. After the girl accepts his proposal they then publicly announce their intentions to the church.

This month Arise Christian Fellowship celebrated completing the New Testament on Sunday mornings. The church began just over 8 years ago. It began as an out reach to the market people. This was no easy task as many of them suffered from alcoholism and drug abuse. When the ministry first began there Brian was actually advised by the local officials to run away because it was too dangerous. God had other plans and with in a short time there was a Bible study meeting under a tree outside of the market with 20—30 men and a study meeting in a little shop with market women.

Dear Friends and Family,

Happy Thanksgiving!

This Thanksgiving season there is so much to be thankful for. As I meditated on all I have to be thankful for, the number 1 reason that kept coming to my mind was my family. Being in ministry there is a tendency to always be occupied with every-one around you and their families and prayer requests. Recently, while I was missing both my parents, the Lord showed me my family and I realized I needed to always be sure that I was ministering to them first and with my best, not with what was left over after ministering to others. I am so very thankful for each of them and their unique personalities and giftings. I am thankful for my husband Brian. For his upright, loving pastor’s heart. I love the way he takes time to talk and pray with everyone who needs it, when they need it. I love how he is gifted with teaching the word in a simple yet challenging way that draws the people to want to know more.

Dear Friends and Family,

Happy 60th Independence Day to Uganda! Uganda received independence from England 60 years ago. One of the lasting influences from those days is the freedom of religion, specifically Christianity. Uganda is by name a Christian country and the ability to share the gospel openly, anywhere is a privilege most countries do not have. After saying all of this, the truth is Christianity in Uganda is “a mile wide but only an inch deep” as the saying goes. Ugandans are very traditional and most Christianity is mixed with witchcraft and other traditional beliefs and practices. Uganda is a country where human sacrifice, especially child sacrifice, still takes place. As missionaries in Uganda while it is easy to share the gospel it is a more challenging task of discipling people in obeying and following God’s Word above all else.

This has been a very interesting time in Uganda, our family and the world. It seems only fitting that recently Brian started the book of Revelation. He did not start it because of the events taking place in the world but it is literally where he is teaching by going book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse through the Bible. It has been a interesting study for the church as many of them have ever done more than skim through the pages and decide it was too difficult to understand or too scary to read. I believe now through hearing teaching on it, instead they are now expectant and excited.

This has been a very, very busy time for us. For the past 2 years, since Covid hit, the guest house has been pretty quiet with just a couple of people coming through here and there. In the past month with teams coming through the guest house and through the church we have had over 60 visitors. I can honestly say that at moments I was so busy that I forgot what day it was. I know some people just say that to make a point but it really happened to me. I had my kids and the visiting kids all in my apartment after having had a sleep over in my living room. By 6am I was outside where team members who were about to fly back to the states were being tested for Covid. This is required by Uganda to get into the airport, I had just finished getting breakfast for everyone on the table when the guard called me to come outside. He told me someone was at the gate for Bible study. I told him, no, Bible study is on Wednesday. He said very matter of factly, “Today is Wednesday”. Wow, I have never moved so fast. I was pulling kids off the couches and having someone sweep, another boil water while I quickly set things up for Bible study. Thankfully, only 2 ladies experienced the mad rush taking place. I am also thankful for what we call “Uganda time” because most ladies showed up 15+ minutes late. This is just a small illustration how busy its been.

I hope you all are enjoying the summer. In Uganda, while its hot or warm all year, December, January and February are our summer. This time of year is kind of a combination between spring and fall. It rains on and off and we have some cool days and some very warm days. While we are not in our summer, summer in the States and Europe bring many visitors to Uganda and through the Far Reaching Ministries Guest House. We are currently preparing for a couple very large teams as well as we are currently hosting a family from Russia, who have been very involved with ministry in our church.

Dear Friends and Family,

This year, so far it seems that there has been a continuing theme of prayer. According to 1 Thessalonians 5 we are to “pray without ceasing”, so this theme should not be surprising. Last month, I shared how we had started the year, after our bout of covid, with an afterglow and prayer service at church. That service inspired the wife of our media director, Esther, to take time to pray a step further. While prayer is a part of every service and ministry we have at Arise Christian Fellowship, Esther thought we needed a day set apart specifically for prayer and fasting. We have now started, on the first Saturday of the month, to have a day of prayer and fasting at the church. Whoever is able gathers at the church at 2pm, following the worship teams’ practice. The worship team members who are able to stay, open the prayer time with some worship while individuals have a time of personal prayer, reflection and repentance. After that there are organized times of prayer where the people pray for specific things such as the church, the country, world events, etc. There is also time for the people to break into smaller groups and pray for one another for whatever prayer requests they might have.

Happy New Year!!

This year the holidays began to feel a bit more like normal. Last year, I remember Christmas was the children and I’s first Sunday back to church after the lengthy lockdown and the government forbidding children under 14 in church. Even then we still had to meet outside, which was actually pretty nice. This year we started the holidays in church and had fun decorating, preparing the Christmas performances and making the sanctuary festive.

This past month has been a bit of the same old, same old as we continue in partial lockdown. I can’t believe we are still battling through Covid and as of now there seems to be no end in sight. As we went through the month other things began to pop up on the news, Afghanistan, Fires, Hurricanes, and the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks on 9/11. All of these have had us spending much time in prayer and look upwards with hope to Jesus’s soon return.

This past month has been reminiscent of last year when Uganda first went into lockdown because of Covid. It is crazy to think so much time has past and yet we are still battling the same thing. 6 weeks in lockdown seemed like a very long time but last year we actually were in lockdown for 4 months before we had the freedom we have now following an easing of this past lockdown. For the next 60 days we have what is called a partial lockdown. People can drive again but only 3 people per vehicle, which makes it hard for families to go anywhere together, businesses can work at 20% but still only essential markets are allowed open. Churches and any type of religious gathering are closed for these 60 more days. Schools are closed until the government can acquire the Pfizer vaccine and vaccinate the 12—18 year olds. Weddings and funerals can have 20 people present. The government put out strict steps to follow as they ease the lock down but the picture here is a picture taken the day after the president spoke. It was as if all of Kampala came out at once.

We pray you are all doing well and enjoying this summer. We have heard that many places around the world are now opening back up. We praise God for those answered prayers.

In Uganda it is a different story. Covid variants are ravaging the country and the people. It seems so strange because last year when the rest of the world was really suffering, here in Uganda we had hardly any cases and very little death. Now that we are hearing praise reports from other countries we find ourselves back in a strict lockdown with more cases and death weekly then all of the last wave. All businesses besides food vendors and essential services are closed. No public or private vehicles allowed. To go shopping people must walk or ride a bicycle. You can have groceries delivered but there is a curfew at 5. If someone works in a food market the government has asked them to sleep there. They have provided mosquitoes nets to the vendors since many of the stalls are out doors.

This time of year always fills me with so much hope. Knowing that my Savior is not dead but Alive! There is no other religion that can claim and prove that their God is alive . This renewed hope comes with a sense of urgency. An urgency to tell others that they too can have hope if they put their faith in Jesus Christ. Just as this time of year brings about new birth for plants and animals we are praying for spiritual new birth for the many people hearing the Word of God through all the different ministries and outreaches taking place.

For the first time in what seems quite awhile I feel like I am ending this month and approaching the new month with real expectancy and hope that things are moving forward: away from covid, away from elections and riots and towards something more real and full promise. Numbers of covid have been going down dramatically here in Uganda and the rest of the world is beginning their vaccines. Ministry outreaches and new studies are taking place and we now have freedom to gather together in large numbers once again.

As I continue to look forward to what this year holds for our ministry the Lord has reminded me that it is not just “our” ministry. It has caused me to reflect over the things the Lord has already done and the people he has brought in our lives along the way. We, Christians, are truly one body, Christ’s Body. In Uganda, Brian pastors Arise Christian Fellowship, but we work together with many other churches and pastors. We spend time helping to build up their congregations and communities as we also receive encouragement and counsel from them. While there are so many people who bless us daily and support us through their wisdom and spiritual giftings, I wanted to mention a few that we work with most closely and Brian even is part of some of their boards.

We are praying for all of you, in you area of the world. Some days, as I watch the news it is hard to believe that it is actually the news and not a science fiction movie. I could never have imagined that one day this would be what the world we live in is like. As the world continues to fight off the effects of Corona virus we have been trying to help those who are further from any type of help or assistance then we are being in Kampala. Uganda is still under many restrictions. The number of cases is rising steadily as well as deaths. Due to these circumstances travel is restricted and there is a strict curfew.

We continue to pray for you all as 2020 seems to continue to challenge and test us. Things in Uganda are continuing to be difficult. This path month Uganda recorded its first Covid death and now it is up to 7. Uganda was put at a level three threat which means that there are community cases that cannot trace the origin of transmission. On top of Covid there have been many natural disasters and crime, kidnapping and domestic abuse is on the rise. Many people are truly suffering and are tempted to lose hope. What the Lord has really been teaching us through this is 2 basic Biblical truths. 1st, love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. If our eyes are not on the Lord, where does our hope come from? 2nd, Love your neighbor as yourself. We are very blessed to have continued to receive support from our FRM and SGWM families during a time when so many have lost their jobs and cannot provide. We cannot keep those blessings to ourselves. While we cannot help every suffering person in Uganda or even in Kampala we can help some of them.

I never would thought that after all these months we would still be dealing with Covid. It now seems like years ago that we were visiting America and taking the kids to Disneyland. I was actually just the beginning of this year and now the world, Uganda, is such a different place. Uganda started off with almost no cases and now seems to be having more and more cases daily. To be honest it is just starting to get scary here as we begin to hear about cases near us and in the city. I have to try to stay away from the news and focus and the positive things that are happening.

This has been a quote we have heard often over the last couple of weeks from President Museveni, the president of Uganda. As I write this the country has been in lockdown for almost 2 months. I know that most of the world is currently abiding by stay at home orders. While I believe there is hardships everywhere because of these orders, countries like Uganda are really struggling. In Uganda, many people, especially in the cities, live hand to mouth. This means that they normally work a day, earn money for that day and feed their family for that day. After this amount of time in lockdown people are starving. Families are desperate and there has been much violence, especially within families.

This past season has been a bit of a difficult time for our family. With in a short period of time 2 of our beloved dogs passed away: one from cancer and one from an unexpected accident. One week later our house was robbed, which according to the police most likely was someone who works with us and we have trusted. Shortly after these incidents the hardest hit of all arrived when we got the phone call that my dad had passed away.

As the holiday season has come to an end and we are jumping into the new year, we wanted to take time to share about the Christmas outreaches that have taken place.

As part of our church ministry we reach out to the market place and the people who work there. This is actually how Arise Christian Fellowship began. Many men came to the Lord and the church was born. The women in the market place have been harder to reach. Many of them have had very hard lives and are caught up in practicing witchcraft. As I was preparing for this years women’s Christmas tea the women from the market place were really on my heart, that they would really understand the true meaning of Christmas and why Jesus came. There are a couple ladies from church who come from the market place so in the days leading up to the Tea they were really helpful in reaching out and inviting other market ladies to come. I planned for 2 teachings and a light meal, as well as Christmas cookies and tea.

Summer is always a crazy time for us in Uganda. For most of the summer we have teams coming in and out of the guest house to serve with various ministries that Far Reaching Ministries has in Uganda and in Sudan. It is amazing to be a small part of what God is doing in and through so many peoples lives. While the summer keeps us busy at the guest house it is also a busy time at church and in the neighborhoods.

Each month we share about the different ministries that take place through Arise Christian Fellowship and Far Reaching Ministries. As I was reviewing all the things that have taken place in this last month one thing has really stood out to me: the emphasis of teaching or sharing God’s Word. It is the foundation of all the ministries, outreaches and events that take place. Isaiah tells us that God’s Word will not return void, Romans tells us that faith comes from hearing God’s Word and 2 Timothy tells us to teach what we have learned to others who might teach it as well. As I review and write about what is happening in the ministry here in Uganda, I pray that all of these are being fulfilled and are a testimony to others.

This past month we had a very big surprise. Amina came to visit! She surprised all her friends and family. Only Brian and I knew. We didn’t tell the children and when they woke up in the morning Amina came to breakfast. They went crazy. Luke and Laylee were laughing/crying and hugging her. Liana was in shock, she just sort of stood there staring like she couldn’t believe it was real. She actually remained that way for a couple of days. For those of you who may not know, Amina is like one of our children. She lived with us for many years before getting married and moving to the USA.

This has been quite a busy and exciting month of ministry in Uganda. We have had outreaches, conferences and many types of celebrations.

Vicky Bentley, Brian and I were invited to South Western Uganda to teach at a conference. The conference was arranged by Moses Ouni, who has been there in the past teaching Inductive Bible Study. IBS is an important skill for pastors here as many have not had proper schooling or Biblical training. There are also very many pastors in Uganda who do not teach the whole counsel of God’s Word but instead teach topical messages that they think the people want to hear or that will get their congregations to tithe more. We were excited to be apart of these follow up conferences teaching verse by verse. Vicky and I taught through the book of James with the women.

As most of you know summertime is a very busy time for us in Uganda. Summer is when most churches plan their missions trips so it is also when we plan opportunities for them to be able to serve here with our ministry and with Far Reaching Ministries. Between the beginning of June - August we had about 60 people come through the guest house. It is such a blessing for us personally to be a part of their excitement and wonder of all the new things they are experiencing in Africa that now seem common place to us. It is also a blessing for Arise Christian Fellowship to see the heart of missions as they meet and hear the testimonies of the visitors.

This has been a very busy month of women’s ministry. We’ve had guest speakers and visitors, we started a new book and I taught a women’s retreat.

In the summer months we get many visitors coming through the guest house. More often than not they are just there briefly on the way to somewhere else. This past month we were blessed to have a team from Maranatha Chapel in San Diego spend a couple of days with us. Most people in Kampala are familiar with their church because we play Pastor Ray Bentley daily on the radio during rush hour. Annie Stone, the daughter of Pastor Ray, was on the team. She and her team came prepared to share with our ladies. Annie taught a message on fear vs faith. This message was so great for the ladies but it also ministered to me right where I am in my own life. After the teaching the ladies from Maranatha gave a gift to each our ladies. Each lady received a gift bag with a daily devotional in it. We are so thankful they took they time bless us with the Word and fellowship.

This past month Luke and Laylee celebrated their birthdays. While celebrating their birthdays it got me thinking about the youth in Uganda. Uganda’s population is 78% under the age of 17. No matter where you go you find children of all ages. Our church is no exception. Most Sundays the Sund ay school is more then double the adults in service. If it is a school holiday or special event that number can even double again.

This past month we had a wonderful time celebrating Christ’s resurrection. We began the season with celebrating with Palm Sunday. In Uganda, on Palm Sunday, everyone is carrying palm leaves. Boda drivers attach them to their motorcycles, cars have them attached various places and people walking down the street are waving them. It was no different at our church. Almost every person present was waving palm leaves throughout worship.

This month we really have seen a testimony to the truth that, “He is working all things together for good….” A couple months ago we asked for prayer for a young man in our church called, Light. Light had been on his way home when he was hit and ran over by a truck.

Milk Cows for Bukuya

Thank you for your prayers for the village of Bukuya, a small rural village about two hours outside of Kampala. We’ve shared how the people of this remote village are mostly animist or Muslim and are very wary of outsiders

With the support of our ministry partners, we took a step to gain their trust by providing clean water for them. We dedicated the well in August and conducted an outreach in the village (which you can read about here).

Summer is coming to an end but ministry is not slowing down. A couple months ago we wrote about a village called Bukuya. We shared how the people of this remote village are mostly animist or Muslim and are very wary of outsiders

We felt the Lord showing us an opportunity to gain their trust through providing clean water…God answered our prayers through many of you

At that time we felt the Lord showing us an opportunity to gain their trust through providing clean water for them. On Brian’s family farm there is a natural spring. We let the need be known that we wanted to tap into that spring to bring clean water to this village. God answered our prayers through many of you and we were able to tap into the spring and provide not one but two wells.

This was an exciting month for Brian as he was able to go to Israel. My brother in-law has been a part of several archaeological digs in Israel and Jordan. This year he invited Brian to be a part of a new dig at Shilo. Shilo is where the tabernacle and ark of the covenant were located for 369 years.

We are officially the Kanyike family!!!!!!!

It has been a very long process. We began the adoption process 7 years ago and this month we have finished. There have been so many trials and hindrances along the way but we praise God that they were just logistical matters. For us from day one our children have been ours, no one had to tell us or them, but it is nice to finally be recognized as a family by the Ugandan government.

Bringing Two Kinds of Water

Dear brothers and sisters:

Bukuya is a small rural village about two hours outside of Kampala. The people there live by growing crops, and a number of the villagers follow Islam or Catholicism. By God’s grace we have been given farm land in the village and we hope to provide economic opportunity for our Arise Christian Fellowship brothers and sisters to raise their own crops to sell in the Kampala Marketplace. At the same time we seeking the Lord about the best ways to reach the local people.

This month we have seen the beginning of a new Women’s study and the completion of this seasons soccer out reaches.

Every Tuesday we host a women’s Bible study at our home. If every lady shows up we are about 22. The ladies who come are from varied nationalities and backgrounds. We represent 5 different countries and 4 different churches. A couple of the ladies have been attending this study since I started it when I moved to Kampala 11 years ago. Our newest members are family members of American embassy workers.

Recently, there has been a marriage revival at Arise Christian Fellowship. One Sunday morning as Brian was teaching the topic of marriage came up. He told the church what true marriage is and that if you are just living with someone and calling them your spouse that is not marriage but it is fornication. This is true no matter how long you have been doing it and no matter how many kids you have had together. To be married you must be legally married according to the law of the country we live in. In Uganda the law states that a couple must have a marriage certificate to be legally married.

We write a lot about different conferences or Bible Studies taking place. While we enjoy reaching people with the Word of God through those ways we also sometimes like to have a little more fun and get a little exercise as we spread the Gospel. We do this through sport outreaches. Sport outreaches allow us to reach groups of people we may not normally come in contact with. These outreaches draw a younger, college age crowd.

A New Church Building for Arise Christian Fellowship!

This past month has been an exciting time for Arise Christian Fellowship. For the past year and 3 months since the Church began we have been meeting on Sundays in a thatched roof structure. While it was a very beautiful setting it was not always practical. We could not always meet when we wanted because during the week it was a restaurant. Also when it rained we often got wet and when it was hot it was really hot. The owners have been in the process of building a 3 story enclosed structure on the same property just near the entrance. They had approached us a couple of times in the past about renting it but it was just too expensive for our young church. At the beginning of March the landlord called us again and this time said she really, really felt that we were supposed to have the top floor for our church and was willing to give it to us for half price. We talked with the leadership and all felt that this was definitely from the Lord.

We pray you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! This past Christmas we had the privilege of having a young South Sudanese girl, Jackie, stay with us. She had come down from S Sudan so we could take her to an eye clinic in Jinja, about 3 hours south east of Kampala. Jackie is 16 and since she was 9 she has suffered with an eye problem that she was told was cataracts. In Jinja there is a very modern hospital that will do cataract surgery for free. We went down the week before Christmas for her to have the eye exam and hopefully the surgery. The doctor who examined her eyes was very nice but he told us that it was not cataract but a calcification of the cornea. The surgery for that is considered a transplant surgery and the doctor was not certain it could be done in Uganda. Needless to say, Jackie was very sad and disappointed. Instead of sending Jackie back to S Sudan for Christmas we asked her to stay with us through the holiday since we would be traveling to S Sudan on December 28 and she could travel with us. Jackie is an orphan who lives with her elder brother’s family.

Arise Christian Fellowship celebrated its first birthday!

This is the month that Arise Christian Fellowship celebrated its 1 year birthday. It has been exciting to see what the Lord has accomplished in such a short time and in such unexpected ways. In October last year we would have never expected that in one month we would have planted a church. The Lord had called Brian to minister to the men of the market place, many of whom are grown street kids. They, along with many of the women from the market, chose to follow Christ and desired to know Him better. This led us to hosting a baptism at a nearby pool which turned out to become where we meet on Sundays for church beginning with that Baptism.

This has been a very fun and busy month for the ministry. Arise Christian Fellowship had ts first Afterglow service, our first baby dedication as well as hosting many visitors coming through the guest house. For quite sometime we had been praying about having an extended time of worship and prayer (afterglow) at Arise. Most of our congregation are new believers and come from difficult backgrounds. We have been teaching them the word of God as well as the basics of the faith. We want them to have a true personal relationship with the Lord, to know how to communicate to Him and hear from Him. We decided that an afterglow that had worship, prayer and teaching / instruction through out would be a great way to get them immersed in God presence and learn how to better have a relationship with Him.

This month we saw the launch of the men’s ministry at Arise Christian Fellowship.

As you may remember the church was started as a result of men from the market place coming to Christ. The growth we have seen in such a short time is nothing less than miraculous, especially considering the back ground of most of these men. As they have been learning the foundations of the faith at t he market once a week and attending church on Sunday the men have been developing an even greater hunger for God’s word and for more instruction on how to apply it. On Sundays after church they could gather around Brian and ask questions and share testimonies for hours.

Happy Easter!

As missionaries we spend a lot of time reaching out to the lost. We evangelize, go on missions trips to unreached areas and disciple new believers. While these are good things it is also good to take the opportunity to help other believers with their ministries and to make time to encourage other ministers in the Lord.

This past month our family and most of the ministry team from Arise Christian Fellowship traveled 5 hours west to Fort Portal to encourage and serve the church and ministry team there at Calvary Chapel Fort Portal.

Pastor Doug Calhoon and his family traveled to the States at Christmas time so that his wife, Destiny, could deliver their third baby. While in the States, Destiny became aware of some serious health problems and is now seeking treatment. Please keep her and their family in prayer during this time.

Doug’s Assistant Pastor, Nicolas has been teaching and leading the team at CCFP . Along with the help of the ministry team and missionaries Jo and Greg Clarkson, Nicolas is doing a great job. We, as a team, prayed and decided to set a side a long weekend to go and serve along side the CCFP team that they could have a rest and enjoy some fellowship and encouragement. We were there for 5 days. While we were there to bless them I must say we left feeling like the ones who had been blessed.

First of all we would like to thank you for praying for us and the ministry here. We know that many of you have worried about us as Uganda has been on the news quite often this year with reports of riots and violence. We have been blessed by your concern and want you to know that while we have experienced the unrest we are fine and in no danger. We thought we would use this newsletter to inform you of some of the events that have been taking place that have led to the countries unrest.

A New Season Begins

Dear Friends and Family,

A new season is beginning at Calvary Chapel Kampala as we say goodbye to the Kelly family.

Pastor Brian and his wife Lynne moved to Uganda 9 years ago to help church plant in Kampala. For about 8 of those years Brian Kelly has served as senior pastor and the church has grown and matured spiritually under his care.

In Uganda it is not a common practice for a senior pastor to step down from ministry. With the prosperity doctrine so strong here it is a pastor’s goal for his church to grow and support him which keeps pastors from moving on or raising up others to replace them.

Once again a new semester is under way. All Nations Theological College was started in the 1990’s by missionaries from South Korea. Their desire is to reach and teach those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to learn God’s Word, to equip them to take what they learn back to their countries and churches and share it with others.

Dear Friends and Family, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! This has been an amazing year both for the ministry and for our family. We have seen many people reached through missions, church outreach and events. We have experienced much sadness as the city rioted over the burning of the kings tombs and the killing of so many in the terrorist bombings. There has been much joy and celebration with the arrival of Luke Mukisa into our family. This month Brian and I have an amazing testimony to share with you. It is the testimony of how God gave us our son, Luke Mukisa. In May Brian and I celebrated our 4th anniversary. From the very beginning we wanted to have children. After about 2 years and no children we went for every test imaginable but the doctors could find nothing wrong with either of us. If you have ever struggled with infertility then you know all the questions and doubts that arise. People would ask me about adoption and I felt that if God was not giving me children then there must be a reason so who was I to go and get one myself. After sometime I was having lunch with a friend of mine who has adopted several children. I was sharing with her that children are a gift from God and that James tells us to help orphans is pure and undefiled religion., encouraging her in her calling as a mother. Something happened as I was sharing with her, it was like the Lord was speaking to me, giving me those verses. That day I went home and shared it with Brian. He immediately said yes we would begin praying about it and would start inquiring when we came back from the states early next year.

our church who are engaged and soon to be married. We take them through 12 weeks of counseling based on the book “Preparing for marriage God’s Way”. Our focus during this time is to encourage them as a couple to grow in their relationship with God as they grow in their relationship with one another, as well as addressing common issues all couples face during their courtship and marriage.

Recently Brian’s tribe experienced a cultural loss. In this newsletter we would like to share with you a bit of the history and about what happened.

Brian and his family are from a tribe called Buganda. Buganda is one of the largest and most influential tribes in Uganda. Kampala, the capital of Uganda is located right in the middle of Buganda territory. Brian’s family and ancestors have a close history with the royal family. Many of the Kabakas (kings) have come from Brian’s clan, the Mmamba s. Throughout the reign of many different kings in their history the Kanyike family were the grounds keepers and palace gardeners for the Kabaka.

Testimony

I was born July 5, 1979 to Richard and Margaret Kanyike. I was raised and educated in Kampala, Uganda. I am the eldest of seven children born to my parents. We were raised in a Catholic family. After I had finished Senior 6 I experienced many things in my life, most of which were not so good. I thought to be happy I must work hard and be prosperous. Instead I found myself working hard at various businesses without any success or happiness. I tried using alcohol to feel happy but still was not happy. Finally all my business attempts collapsed and I was not only unhappy but had no money or friends. The “friends” I had left when there was no more money. My parents were not happy with me because they did not like my bad lifestyle. It was here at my life that I felt I could go no lower. I had no money, no friends, I couldn’t go back home, I pretty much felt that no one, no where loved me and never would because of the bad things that had happened in my life. I did not know where else to turn but to God.I went to the nearest church and asked to be prayed for. I knew then that it was Christ alone who could help me and turn my life around and bring me up out of my despair. I did not have a permanent church in which I began going but went wherever.One day a friend from my youth who had also become born again invited me to Calvary Chapel Kampala. As I began to attend regularly for about two months, I watched the pastors and their love for the congregation. I listened to how they taught God’s Word verse by verse, my life was changed beginning on the inside, in my heart. I was happy, very happy, and I knew a life lived for God was the only way to stay happy.I began to volunteer at the church and soon was hired on staff as the facilities manager, over-seeing the logistics for the church (cleaning, paying bills, opening and closing the building, etc). Around this same time the church began a Bible College. I enrolled and after three years of study, I graduated with a degree in Theology and a passion to teach God’s Word. The pastor of Calvary Chapel Kampala gave me an opportunity to put my passion to use by offering me the Lunch Hour Bible study to teach.As I look at my life now I can with Paul say “Rejoice again I say Rejoice,” the Lord has given me more than I could have dreamt and happiness I could never have achieved working for the sole purpose of getting wealthy. I am now married to a beautiful, godly woman I met while serving at Calvary Chapel Kampala. Her name is Jill and she is an American who has now lived in Uganda for seven years. She had worked in the north with Sudanese refugees before coming to Kampala to become the Women’s Ministry director. As we served alongside one another at the church and I saw the benefit my ministry and myself received by her assistance I knew that this was what the Lord intended when He created woman to be a helpmate, so I asked her to marry me.

Dear Friends and Family,

Last semester I was approached by All Nations Theological Seminary, a Bible college ran by South Korean missionaries, and invited to teach at their school. Many of the missionaries from their campus attend Calvary Chapel Kampala. Since February 1st , I have been teaching once a week at their campus which is located near Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria. I was requested to teach a course on women’s ministry. I was happy to teach on this topic as ministry to women is my main ministry at Calvary Chapel Kampala. What I came to find out a little while later was that they wanted me to teach last semester students both male and female about how to minister to women in the church. As the students are from all over east and central Africa as well of from a variety of denominations, it has been quite a challenge and has caused me to, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
